The Centre has approved procurement of 87,226 MT of copra and 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu, providing major price support and relief to farmers.
New Delhi: In a major relief for farmers, the Central Government has approved the large-scale procurement of copra and Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu to protect growers from distress sales and ensure remunerative prices.
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan approved the proposal following a request from the Tamil Nadu Government, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to safeguarding farmers' incomes amid market fluctuations.
Under the approved plan, the Centre will procure 87,226 metric tonnes (MT) of copra during 2026, including 87,000 MT of milling copra and 226 MT of ball copra under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The procurement will be carried out at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), with the total value of procurement exceeding Rs.1,049.16 crore.
Officials said the intervention is aimed at ensuring fair returns to copra growers and preventing distress sales caused by declining market prices. The assured MSP procurement is expected to provide income security and strengthen farmers' confidence in the government's support mechanisms.
In another significant decision, the Union Minister also approved the procurement of 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) during 2026.
The Market Intervention Price has been fixed at Rs.1,545.41 per quintal, enabling farmers to receive better prices despite fluctuations in the open market. The procurement is expected to stabilize prices, protect growers from losses and improve returns for Totapuri mango producers across the state.
The Centre said the twin procurement initiatives would strengthen the rural economy by providing timely market support for two major agricultural commodities. The large-scale intervention is expected to enhance farmers' incomes while reinforcing confidence in government-backed procurement mechanisms.
The decision comes as part of the Centre's continued efforts to ensure price stability, support agricultural producers and promote sustainable rural livelihoods through timely market interventions.
