Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia congratulated Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to building a world-class sports ecosystem in the Northeast.
New Delhi: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, on Monday met star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in New Delhi following her historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal victory in Glasgow.
Congratulating the Olympic medallist on her record-extending achievement, Scindia described Mirabai Chanu as an inspiration for millions of aspiring athletes across India, particularly in the North Eastern Region. He praised her determination, discipline and perseverance, saying her journey reflects the power of dedication and resilience.
During the meeting, Mirabai Chanu shared her inspiring journey to international success, speaking about the challenges she overcame on her path to becoming one of India's most accomplished sportspersons.
The discussions also covered various aspects of high-performance sports, including scientific training methods, nutrition, recovery cycles, fitness management and the importance of adequate rest and sleep in achieving peak athletic performance.
Scindia also appreciated the contribution of Mirabai Chanu's coach, trainer and physiotherapist, acknowledging that international sporting success depends on a strong support system backed by expert guidance and sports science.
The Union Minister highlighted the Ministry of DoNER's efforts to build a comprehensive sports ecosystem in the Northeast through the High Level Task Force (HLTF).
He said the Ministry's 'One State, One Sport' initiative aims to help each Northeastern state develop excellence in sports where it enjoys a natural competitive advantage, including weightlifting, archery and football.
According to Scindia, the initiative goes beyond infrastructure development by focusing on world-class coaching, sports science, nutrition, athlete welfare and scientific training.
"Our North Eastern Region must produce many more Mirabai Chanus through world-class training and support," the Minister said, adding that providing quality facilities within the region itself would encourage more young athletes to pursue excellence.
Mirabai Chanu's trainer, Vijay Sharma, also highlighted the immense sporting talent in the Northeast and expressed confidence that the Centre's initiatives would strengthen grassroots sports development.
The meeting reaffirmed the Union Government's commitment, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, to strengthening sports infrastructure, coaching excellence and athlete development while unlocking the Northeast's vast sporting potential.
