Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and HSL CMD R.Adm. C. Raghuram discussed maritime self-reliance, including plans for a Greenfield Shipyard in Andhra Pradesh to boost jobs and industry.

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh is poised to play a pivotal role in India's maritime ambitions, with plans for a Greenfield Shipyard expected to strengthen the State's position as a major shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing hub.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Rear Admiral Chandrasekharan Raghuram, VSM (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.
During the interaction, the HSL chief highlighted the shipyard's contribution to strengthening India's maritime self-reliance. As the country's only defence shipyard on the East Coast, HSL plays a key role in indigenous shipbuilding, ship repair and submarine refit programmes that support India's strategic and naval capabilities.
Mr. Raghuram also briefed the Governor on HSL's operational and financial turnaround, as well as its expansion strategy aligned with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
A major focus of the discussion was the proposed establishment of a Greenfield Shipyard in Andhra Pradesh. Machilipatnam and Dugarajapatnam have been identified as potential locations for the project, which is expected to significantly enhance India's shipbuilding capacity while driving industrial development in the State.
The proposed facility is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, attract investments and strengthen the maritime ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh, reinforcing its strategic importance along India's eastern coastline.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment of the State government and Hindustan Shipyard Limited to advancing India's maritime self-reliance and supporting the country's long-term vision of becoming a global maritime power.
Officials said the proposed shipyard would not only contribute to national defence preparedness but also accelerate Andhra Pradesh's emergence as a leading destination for shipbuilding, marine engineering and allied industries.
