India’s EV retail sales hit an all-time high of 3.33 lakh units in Sept, growing 74% YoY. FADA report highlights major spikes in 2-wheelers and passenger EVs.

India’s electric vehicle market reached a historic milestone in September, recording its highest-ever monthly retail sales at 3,33,634 units. According to latest industry figures from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), this represents a 74% year-on-year (YoY) surge compared to the same month last year.
Overall EV market penetration across all vehicle segments expanded to approximately 13%, up from roughly 10% recorded in September of the previous year.
The performance was largely driven by rising consumer demand across mass-market segments, with electric two-wheelers and passenger electric vehicles (EVs) each setting all-time monthly delivery records. FADA President Sai Giridhar highlighted that electric mobility is shifting from a niche alternative to a default buying choice, propelled by pre-festive buying, lower operating costs, wider vehicle choices, and supportive policies like the PM E-DRIVE scheme and state-level EV incentives.
Two-wheelers led the market in sheer volume, climbing to an unprecedented 2,07,314 units—marking an 88.67% YoY and 13.16% month-on-month (MoM) increase, which raised segment penetration to 11.6%. Concurrently, passenger EV sales expanded to 36,108 units, achieving an impressive 94.56% YoY jump and lifting passenger car EV adoption to 8.5%.
Commercial and cargo segments also demonstrated sustained electrification. Electric three-wheelers retained their status as India's most electrified vehicle category with a 64.9% penetration rate on 86,024 units sold (up 40% YoY). Meanwhile, electric commercial vehicles registered 4,188 units, reflecting a massive 158% annual increase despite a 10.9% sequential decline, bringing commercial fleet EV adoption to roughly 4%.
